This project started due mainly to my interest in cartography, railways, trams, walking, photography and holidays in Switzerland over the last few years. I wanted a map that clearly showed all railways, all stations, lake ports, cablecars, gondolas, chairlifts and funiculars. Using the cartographic application https://www.mapdiva.com/ortelius for the Mac I commenced the Swiss maps in late December 2014 and have slowly added other European countries; trying to find accurate information, I feel, has vindicated this project as it's surprising how few railway systems seem to to provide an easily accessible and comprehensive map of their network.
Due to limitations of size allowed for images on this website, the map text may, unfortunately, appear slightly fuzzy as I had to reduce the resolution slightly to make the pages uploadable; this is a website issue, not an "Ortelius" issue.
I was born in 1961 to Europe-travel-loving parents and every summer we used to motor across France, Switzerland or Germany to get to Italy, Spain or Austria. I used to be the Editor of the ABC Rail Guide (that became the OAG Rail Guide) which ceased publication a few years ago and then worked in the City for a financial institution; I have now retired.
Living in Luton, we're blessed with flights to many destinations in Europe so getting there is now even easier, albeit less interesting; however it does give you the opportunity to sample the trains from the airports to your final destination (I particularly recommend the original route Milan to Zurich for fantastic scenery on both sides, as the train spirals up into the mountains, then descends past lakes, campsites and farms).
The links to country rail maps page shows links to my various European railway map pages that I have built, showing all stations and lines in a particular country; this site is not intended to be 100% geographically accurate but near enough to be useful hopefully.
As it is only me working this site, there will inevitably be errors discovered: spelling mistakes, duplicated station names, missing stations/routes; I will endeavour to update as soon as possible any mistakes that are found.
